Wooden ship model kit - beginners? - wooden model ship building

I want to buy one of the boat and I'm sure where to start, I heard American manufacturers a better orientation suggestion? I'm pretty good, but some of these boats are very complex. I am particuarly interested in old ships and have difficulty finding American manufacturers that make them - suggestions greatly appreciated - even if you know a good book for beginners to build wooden boats could be useful, thanks!
